• How:                  With Your HELP, we can make a difference in a child’s life. Children are Priority ONE! Advanced ticket sales are $5, and Volunteers are needed.

 Have we mentioned this is a world record event? That Starbucks will be there serving their famous coffee? A Harley-Davidson motorcycle drawing from LA Harley-Davidson with 1 of 500 keys saved for this event, Blessing of the bikes at LA Harley Lewiston, Escorted motorcycle ride to the breakfast? Radio ads from 107.5 Frank FM and 99.9 The Wolf? Also, there will be a 50/50 drawing, Car raffle from Lisbon High School. Come One, Come ALL!

8. Update of sponsors: We added some this week – Jim’s Auto Sales, Platz Associates, Gleason Media. Clarified that corporate ticket purchases do not qualify for name on shirt.
9. Breakfast volunteers – getting lots of volunteers – keep the names coming. Sarah compiling list.

14. Ruby Tuesday Fundraiser! Andie to try to get answer from them. If they agree to this project, then we want to hand out flyers at the breakfast!.
15. Chamber Spotlighter Recap – had excellent feedback. Our guest speaker noted that our upcoming breakfast was the “talk of the table” at his table. We lined up several additional volunteers, including some “celebrity flippers.”
16. Guest Speaker: Marcel Gagne spoke about the Goodwill Take 2 program, an innovative youth enrichment program focused on helping 18 to 21 year old youths who have had a history of involvement with the juvenile justice system develop skills to keep them out of the adult justice system! A six month program, Goodwill Take 2 provides job and life skill training to better prepare these folks to lead productive lives, and also work towards their GED or high school equivalency program. The program accepts youth only from Androscoggin County, with no adult convictions, and no “predatory” history, and hasntly 13 students enrolled. Thank you for sharing Marcel!

Pre-meeting – 50/50 tickets – No winner yet!

1. Convene – pledge – blessing.
2. Meal – buffet.
3. Guest Speaker: Jack Day spoke about Camp To-Belong, hosted at Camp Wigwam in Waterford each year. The Camp, founded by a woman who had been a foster child who reunited with siblings later in life, provides a week-long camp experience for foster children and their siblings. Often these children are not placed together, and rarely get to spend birthdays and other important holidays together. This camp opportunity brings them together and works to recreate those experiences, in between the swimming, water skiing, tubing, canoeing, and other such fun activities. While the Camp can always use funds, Jack emphasized that they are in critical need of volunteers for the week, as the camper:volunteer ratio is 2:1. This year’s training for volunteers will be held August 16/17/18, and the camp week is August 19 to 24. Think about being a volunteer, even if you can just make it for a day!

9. Discussed having a photographer (one who knows what s/he is doing!) available for event. Members to check with contacts to try to find a volunteer.
10. Key Club updates. We realized that we have not had a scholarship committee this year. As we had no “fundraising” activities this past year, and we did fund the scholarships from the prior year, we voted to table the scholarships for this year and focus on our fundraising event.
11. Business issues:
    1. Clarification on B&G Club donation. Club will still donate the $175 to B&G Club.
    2. Advised of decision to allow students to have raffle for project graduation.

Ticket Sales – Patti to contact the Lewiston Shaw’s and Hannaford for ticket sales. Mike to contact Auburn stores for ticket sales.

Pancake batter pricing – Mike reviewed quote from SYSCO of $2100! Ruth to follow up with Goodman Whitman to see if their pricing is better.

Next Meeting – need to do follow-up for corporate ticket sales!

Key Club updates. none

Business issues: Reviewed fund requests. Approved the following:

• Auburn Middle School Odyssey of the Minds Team – $500
• Auburn Public Library – $1000
• Auburn-Lewiston YMCA – $500
• Root Cellar – voted to participate/donate for their seasonal baskets program.
•  Boy Scouts of America – Andie to represent the club at the dinner – no funding approved at this time.
• Kiwanis Foundation of New England – approve $170 ($10/member).
• Boys and Girls Club – approved $175 towards their awards night. Note: Andie contacted me later and stated that she had erred in describing the program. I assured her that we would honor the $175, and would discuss at next meeting.
• Lisa Stevens – approved $200 towards her service dog. Need to do letter.
• Emily Wright – Approved $500 towards her tuition to STRIVE U.

Note from Sarah: When we met, we decided not to allow Lisbon HS to sell raffle tickets for the car they are trying to sell. At the meeting immediately following our club meeting, Mike and I met with a woman who is involved with that program, and who is also extremely involved with our breakfast. The money for that event is for their Project Graduation, a very worthwhile event. Mike and I conferred, and decided to allow the students to set up a table and sell tickets. We would like to approach the high school to charter a Key Club, and we would like to foster a relationship with these outlying towns, and hopefully draw new members. I apologize if anyone is offended by our reversal of the club vote, but the circumstances were such that we felt it was warranted.

Election of Officers: Roster was approved as presented with one minor change. Jason will serve as President-Elect next year, and Andie will be Vice President. Thanks Team!!!

1. I.       Convene – pledge – blessing.
2. II.    Meal – buffet. Improved eggs! New shipment of fruit!

III. Guest Speaker: Mary Lafontaine (apparently a woman of many talents…city councilor, head of Androscoggin Chamber …) spoke about the Career Center and its programs. Discussed what are the perceived – and real – barriers to employment, and shared information on a variety of programs offered by the Center such as Work Ready Program, Women Unlimited, Literacy Volunteers, and Good Will – Take 2. Did you know that 1 out of 5 people in Androscoggin County cannot read or write? Volunteers are always needed. Thanks Mary  – AND she’ll volunteer on PB day!!

IV. Pancake breakfast planning.  Meeting today at L-A Harley at 9.

1. A.    Poster – Poster was blessed by the members. Flurry of activity after our regular meeting – correct usage of school name is “St. Dominic Academy.”
2. B.     Update of sponsors: Reviewed sponsor list – need to be sure Mailhot Sausage is added!
3. C.     Looking for volunteers – sign up “everyone you know and those you don’t!”
4. D.    Confirmed all members present at meeting will be present to help for breakfast. Need confirmation from others!
5. V.    Key Club updates – None

VI. Business issues:  Review request from Auburn Middle School for support for their Odyssey of the Minds competition – seeking assistance to send 10 students. Will vote at next meeting or on April 24^th.

1. VII.          Division 5 Caucus: To be held in Standish on April 20^th! Sarah to attend. Anyone else??  This is get an update on the division, and discuss future leadership.
2. VIII.       Division 5 Training Conference: To be held in Casco at Camp Sunshine on April 27^th. Sarah, Lynda, and Patti to attend.

IX. International Kiwanis Conference in Vancouver – can check out web site if interested at www.newenglandkiwanis.org.

Patti J for Mary being in attendance. She brought Junior Achievement Program into the schools – very rewarding!

Andy J combined for son in All-Eastern concert with some of the top singers in the northeast, and J for one-year anniversary of the date that he and Mike first approached Norway-Paris Club for help to save our Club! A year ago things looked really bleak….and now???!!!

Jason L dispatcher was out due to death in the family; J his closer was able to make it in at 7 so he can make meeting; J because the first guest he was “responsible for” made it!!!

Sarah J for 12 pounds lost!

Mary J for mom who passed away recently and is now with her dad; L  for great nephew (4 years old) with a brain tumor … has been given four weeks to live. Seeks prayers….

1. XIV.       MEMBER HOT SEAT! … (already heard from Andy C, Anthony D’A (x2), Andie H, Ron B, Mike M, Jason T, Patti G, Sarah, , Madeline, Julie, Sarah (x2), Ruth, Lynda). Jason shared that two years ago, his grandmother won tickets to Taylor Swift, and that he is huge fan! Wife was able to get tickets out of Grandma so Jason could attend concert at Foxborough stadium. Sorry he didn’t get any clothing tossed to him, but he didn’t give up any clothing to Taylor either! Won’t go again – too loud!  Bonus hot seat: Sarah had to add that in high school, her band was the very first to march on the turf at what was then – SHAEFER STADIUM!

Introduction of Guests.

Guest Speaker: Jenna Stepp shared some terrific information about the institute which brings in children (teenagers) from all around the world to participate in a nine-month program. The participants required to live with host families, and make at least one international trip each session, with this year being the trip to the Dominican Republic. Guest Leah (from South Paris!) spoke about working with a group in Maryland that dealt with the issue of human trafficking, a program called SAFE HOPE. Guest Amy spent time overseas, her first exposure to folks in true poverty. The group worked construction projects, and most notably helped the town build a cistern to ease the water shortage. Program is going strong …already have 14 signed up already for next year, and more Institutes are opening around the country!

BONUS Guest Speaker – Jim Wilkins from the Library spoke about the library programs – our club has always been a terrific sponsor, providing $1000 each year to purchase passes for families to take their children to museums and parks (Gray Animal Farm is the most popular!). They managed last year through other sources, but are clearly seeking our support again. (Sarah will send along our request form to them).

Meal – buffet.

Pancake breakfast planning update.  Discussed receipt of check for pancakge breakfast from Federal Distributors, as well as personal donation from John Cronin to rejoin and have balance “undesignated.”  Sarah reported that Wal-Mart will most likely provide a donation, but we won’t know until beginning of May. Discussed posters and played radio ad – to the delight of all!!!!

Key Club updates. Nothing new to report.

Business issues:  None discussed.

Election of Officers: Meeting agenda will list the available positions. Will fill in the roster at the working meeting!

Ruby Tuesday Fundraiser! Deferred to next week.

Kiwanis One Day.  April 6, 2013. Offered to have club members join with Norway-Paris to support the Annual Dance to raise money for Special Olympics.

Discussed schedule of guest speakers. Need to reconfirm Kim Veilleux and rescheduled Lewiston PD.

Pancake breakfast planning.  Next committee meeting scheduled for that day at L-A Harley. Mike provided update on corporate sponsorships. Wally Camp of Rowe Ford has pledged a $1000 donation. Much discussion about different “levels” of sponsorships – like platinum, gold, and silver. Had suggestion that we could set up a “sponsor table” and have it manned during the event where our sponsors’ media propaganda could be made available. (The lower level sponsors wouldn’t have a full display, but could have information disseminated). Andie asked – and Sarah confirmed – that Key Clubs be invited to participate.

1. NEW CATEGORY – Pancake Breakfast publicity – We will try to get articles out on a regular basis to let folks know we’re back! Andie to draft initial article to go out for 4/1. Then will need updates for 4/15, 4/29, and then WEEKLY in May.

Key Club updates. Andie came up with an excellent idea to see if there is any interest in all three Key Clubs getting together – Sarah will email. No updateds.

LEWISTON-AUBURN KIWANIS CLUB – MEETING MINUTES

Guest Speaker: Chief Crowell shared information concerning the very new PAL Center, (PAL stands for Police Activities League), which was hosting an open house on Saturday, March 16^th. The Center will serve as a community hub to provide after school programs for area youth, predominantly in the 4^th, 5^th, and 6^th grades, as those are the target population to help curb the history of disturbances in that area of the city. They will provide homework help, a Kaplan corner, books, and a computer lab, and eventually will have a community garden. The Center is funded through an initial grant of $40,000, and $20,000 from the city’s capital improvement fund. They have received  $160,000 in free labor and materials from community members and businesses. They are always looking for volunteers, as they have no paid staff. Very exciting for the city!!!!

Additional notes: Chief Crowell agreed to be a “celebrity flipper” for our pancake breakfast, and also suggested contacting Gary Boulet and Tom Poulin of the PD for assistance and coordination.

Key Club Updates. Andy will get a check to St. Dom’s for convention. Jason shared that the group decided against spending the extra money for the bus, and was impressed that they make a concerted effort to limit funds spent on the “club” so that they have more dollars to donate towards community projects.  No update from Lewiston or Leavitt.

Business Issues: 

1. Good Shepard Food Bank – Voted last month to provide $500. Someone coordinating gift/photo op? Still need to coordinate!
2. Election of Officers: Sarah to provide Member Guide for members to learn about respective positions and roles. Will be on agenda for April working meeting.
3. Ruby Tuesday Fundraiser! Discussion deferred.

Ruth shared that she has worked in admin services for Advocates for Children for twelve years, and also does freelance writing. She likes to knit and read, and really enjoys the bell-ringing for the Salvation Army (project for this year?). She has lived in Maine for most of her life, with a short stint at St. Michael’s College in Vermont, and then finished up college at UMO. She lives in Auburn with her partner Roger.
